So I've been rewatching the webisodes...

...which are awesome. So is the new extended Pegasus. All of them, however, are pretty dark, and we're told the show is getting darker in Season 3.

That's the stuff I love, personally - but what about the rest of y'all?

"Dark" has always been an attractant for me in source material and in roleplay, so long as it isn't 100% hardcore "we're all going to be tortured and killed and then tortured again, woe!" I like having room to have a sense of humor, or at the very least, bright spots in the murk.

What would New Caprica be without Doral's teal suit? It would be even GREYER than it already is, that's what. Dark situations can lead to some awesome plot and character development, but a little variety goes a long way. I would go so far as to say that an interesting balance between the terrible gravity of humanity's situation and the way individuals are forced to cope or be crushed beneath the weight of it all is one of the things that attracted to me to BSG in the first place.

Well. That, and the robots.

SPOILERS! OMG DIE.

Cough.

I, too, like dark. I mean, the reason I like to play BSG is the post-apocalyptic goodness. As with anything, I think it needs balance - time to catch your breath before you plumet down, otherwise there's nowhere to plumet. It's just all down. But I am in favor of dark!

"Dark" is one of those funny words that doesn't seem to have consistent meaning to people when applied to fiction.

Many people would say without hesitation that my taste runs dark in film, with things like Blade Runner and Akira (and of course, the new BSG) on my lists of favorites. I'm ambivalent towards the term though, because I draw a line between what I would call "dark" and "nihilistic." I like it when characters face a genuine sense of adversity and don't necessarily "win" in the end, but I object when I feel like a plot is nothing but layers upon layers of tragedy and suffering that has no point. If the protagonists are doomed to failure, in the absence of the work as a whole having something to say about it (such as Requiem From a Dream being a portrait of the downward spiral of destructive addiction) the characters should at least be able to make some kind of existential statement as they fail.

BSG is dark in the sense that the setting is founded on a grim and painful situation and populated by flawed characters, but the characters have not only hope, but real questions to grapple with along the way. It's not just about how their lives suck. As long as it's like that, "dark" is just peachy with me as it's what makes the story human and affecting.

On the flip side, last year I realized one reason why I watch BSG but can't imagine being interested in shows like The Sopranos or ER: BSG offers more hope.
